Heritage against comfort in ranking a venue
Older venues score badly on almost every measurable property and keep appearing near the top of published lists, which reveals what those lists are actually valuing.

The pattern that needs explaining
Venue lists frequently place older buildings above newer ones that are superior on capacity, comfort, access, facilities and sightline quality. That pattern is stable enough to require an explanation beyond nostalgia, because it appears in lists compiled by people with quite different tastes. The explanation is that such lists are not scoring the building at all, they are scoring the significance attached to it.
Significance accumulates through events, association and continuity, none of which a new structure can possess regardless of how well it is built. Once that is recognised, the apparent inconsistency disappears and becomes a straightforward difference in criteria.
Why measured properties favour new construction
Building standards, accessibility requirements and expectations of comfort have all risen, so recent venues must meet criteria older ones never faced. Design knowledge has also improved, particularly in sightline geometry and crowd circulation, which are now modelled rather than approximated. Materials and structural techniques permit roof spans and tier geometries that were simply unavailable when older venues were constructed.
A comparison on measured properties therefore compares eras of construction rather than the skill or ambition of the people who built them. That is a legitimate comparison for anybody choosing where to sit and a poor one for anybody assessing what a venue means.
What heritage consists of
Part of it is the accumulation of significant events, which gives a location a set of associations that visitors carry with them on arrival. Part of it is continuity of use, since a venue occupied by the same community across generations acquires a social role a new site cannot replicate quickly. Part of it is architectural distinctiveness, because idiosyncratic structures are recognisable in a way that efficient modern bowls often are not.
These components can be described and discussed, and none of them can be converted into a score without an arbitrary conversion rate. That resistance to measurement is a property of the thing rather than a failure of the analyst.
The redevelopment dilemma
Operators face a genuine conflict, since improving facilities usually requires altering or replacing the features that carry the heritage value. Partial redevelopment preserves some character and often produces an awkward hybrid whose geometry serves neither the old form nor the new requirements. Full replacement delivers the measurable improvements and resets the accumulated significance to nothing, which supporters experience as a real loss.
Relocation compounds this by removing the continuity of place, which is frequently the largest component of the attachment. A ranking that ignores this dilemma will treat every redevelopment as an improvement, which is not how the affected community experiences it.
Ranking each thing on its own terms
The workable approach is to publish separate lists, one for measured venue quality and one for significance, and to keep them apart. Each list is then internally defensible, and the comparison between them becomes the interesting output rather than a source of confusion. Readers understand immediately why a building appears high on one and low on the other, which is the whole content of the argument.
Blending them produces a composite that satisfies nobody and conceals the only distinction the exercise was capable of drawing. The separation also makes clear that a new venue is not failing when it scores low on heritage, it is simply young.
