Capacity, sightlines and access: three axes that rarely agree
The properties that make a venue good for watching, good for reaching and good for filling pull against each other in the design, and no building optimises all three.

Capacity against the average view
Adding seats to a bowl means extending it upwards or backwards, and both directions move the additional seats further from the action. The average distance from the field therefore rises with capacity unless the geometry is made steeper to compensate for the extra rows. That is why a smaller venue can offer a better typical viewing experience than a much larger one containing more excellent seats in absolute terms.
Ranking by capacity and ranking by typical view will therefore produce almost opposite orders among venues of similar design quality. Neither order is wrong, and each answers a question that the other cannot address at all.
Steepness and its consequences
A steep tier improves sightlines because each row sits well above the one in front, reducing obstruction and shortening the sightline path. It also brings the upper rows closer to the field horizontally, which improves both viewing angle and the acoustic relationship with the crowd below. The costs appear in circulation, since steeper stands require more demanding stairs and careful design to remain safe when emptying quickly.
Accessibility requirements interact awkwardly with steepness, and accommodating them well requires deliberate planning rather than a later adjustment. A ranking that scores view and access separately will therefore find the same design decision helping one and hurting the other.
Location and the transport question
A central location makes a venue reachable by existing public transport and places it within walking distance of a large population. Central sites are constrained, which limits footprint, complicates construction and usually forces a more vertical and more expensive structure. Peripheral sites offer space for parking, concourses and adjacent development, at the cost of dependence on road access and a longer journey.
The choice determines how the venue performs on egress, which is often the part of an attendance that supporters remember most negatively. Because the trade is site-specific, comparing venues on access is really comparing the cities and transport networks around them.
Flexibility and the multi-use compromise
Venues designed to host several sports or non-sporting events must accommodate different field dimensions and different sightline requirements. The usual compromise is a shallower bowl with more distance from the front row, which serves every use adequately and none of them ideally. Retractable elements can resolve some of this at considerable cost and with ongoing maintenance implications that outlast the enthusiasm for building them.
A single-purpose venue can optimise fully, which is why the best viewing experiences tend to be found in buildings that do one thing. Any ranking that includes both types without noting the distinction is scoring the brief rather than the execution.
Building an honest venue comparison
Scoring each axis separately and publishing the components allows a reader to select the axis that matters for their own purpose. It also makes the trade-offs visible, since a venue that scores highly on view and poorly on access is telling a coherent design story. Composite scores destroy exactly that information, and they are the format most venue rankings use.
Where a composite is unavoidable, stating the weights alongside it preserves at least the possibility of informed disagreement. The distinction between a design that failed and a design that chose differently is the most valuable thing such a comparison can convey.
