The criteria problem: what a stadium ranking is really scoring
Venues are ranked constantly and almost never against a stated definition, which is why two lists of the same buildings can share barely any entries.

A single word covering many properties
Calling a venue great can refer to its architecture, its atmosphere, its sightlines, its history, its accessibility or the events it has hosted. Those properties are largely independent, so a building can score highly on several and poorly on the rest without any contradiction. A list that does not say which properties it used is therefore uninterpretable, because the reader cannot tell what the order represents.
The absence of a stated definition is also what makes such lists impossible to argue with productively, since there is no shared standard to appeal to. Supplying the definition costs one sentence and converts an assertion into something a reader can actually evaluate.
Who the ranking is for
A supporter attending regularly cares about access, comfort, the view from ordinary seats and how quickly the place empties after an event. A visitor attending once cares about the occasion, the surroundings and whether the building is memorable enough to justify the journey. A competitor cares about the playing surface, the facilities and how the geometry of the stands affects noise and visibility during play.
An operator cares about capacity utilisation, revenue per attendee and how flexibly the building can host events other than the primary sport. Those four readers want four different rankings, and a single list pretending to serve all of them serves none particularly well.
Measurable and unmeasurable components
Some properties are straightforwardly measurable, including capacity, distance from the nearest transport, concourse width and the proportion of seats under cover. Others can be measured with effort, such as sightline quality, which follows from geometry and can be computed for every seat in a building. Atmosphere resists direct measurement, because the sound a crowd produces depends on the occasion as much as on the acoustics of the bowl.
History is not measurable at all, since it is a judgement about which past events matter and to whom they matter. A defensible ranking separates these tiers rather than blending a measured quantity with an impression and reporting a single score.
Weighting as the decisive step
Once components are chosen, the weighting between them determines the order far more than the underlying scores usually do. A ranking that weights heritage heavily will favour older venues with obvious drawbacks in comfort and access, which is a legitimate choice. One that weights facilities heavily will favour recent construction, which is equally legitimate and produces an almost disjoint list.
Because the weighting is where the argument lives, publishing it is the single most valuable thing a venue ranking can do. Publishing the component scores as well allows readers to reweight for themselves, which turns the list into a tool rather than a claim.
Reporting groups instead of positions
Venue differences are frequently too small and too multidimensional to justify a strict ordering with meaningful gaps between adjacent entries. Grouping buildings by character, such as compact and steep against large and open, is more informative than ordering them by a composite score. It also avoids the false precision that invites arguments about whether one venue should sit above another by a single place.
Where a strict order is required, restricting the ranking to one clearly defined property produces something defensible and genuinely useful. A ranked list of sightline quality is a real finding, while a ranked list of overall greatness is a preference presented as one.
