The arithmetic behind an apparent slump

In a rolling system, every result carries an expiry date, and on that date the points vanish whether or not the competitor is playing well. If the expiring result was unusually strong, replacing it requires an equally strong performance in the same week of the following year. Failing to do so produces a fall in the table that observers interpret as decline, even when overall level across the period is unchanged.

The reverse also happens, and a competitor can climb noticeably by holding steady while a poor previous result finally drops away. Neither movement carries the meaning that is routinely read into it, and both are consequences of the accounting rather than of play.

Lumpy distributions and volatile positions

Points are not spread evenly across a season, because the largest events award far more than the smallest and cluster in particular months. A competitor whose total is concentrated in two or three results is fragile, since a single disappointing week can remove a large share of it. A competitor whose total is accumulated across many moderate results is far more stable, and their position moves slowly in either direction.

Two players with identical totals can therefore face completely different risks over the following months purely because of distribution. That structural difference is invisible in the published table, which shows only the sum.

The injury interaction

A competitor absent for an extended period continues to lose points as old results expire while having no opportunity to replace them. The fall is therefore steep and automatic, and it says nothing about the level to which they will return once available again. Protected entry provisions exist precisely because the table cannot distinguish absence from decline and would otherwise punish the former as the latter.

Those provisions are limited in scope, which means a long absence still results in a position that badly misrepresents likely strength. Any comparison involving a returning competitor should treat the ranking number as an administrative fact rather than an assessment.

Why the mechanic is kept

Despite these distortions, expiry is essential, because without it points would accumulate indefinitely and the table would become a career total. A career total is a legitimate measure but a poor basis for entry and seeding, since it would freeze the order against newcomers. Expiry keeps the table responsive and ensures that access to events is governed by recent competitive evidence rather than reputation.

The distortions are the price of that responsiveness, and they fall on everybody rather than on any particular group. A design flaw distributed evenly is closer to a design choice, which is how expiry should be understood.

Reading movement more carefully

The useful comparison is between equivalent periods rather than between consecutive weeks, because equivalent periods control for what was expiring. Tracking points earned in a defined stretch, rather than position held, removes most of the illusion immediately and costs very little effort. Position is a relative quantity and can change because rivals moved, which adds a second source of misinterpretation on top of expiry.

Separating those two effects turns a confusing table into a readable one without requiring any change to the system itself. It also makes clear how rarely a large positional move corresponds to a large change in play.
