Pace adjustment and why raw totals mislead across eras
The number of opportunities a game provides has changed substantially over time, and comparing accumulated totals without accounting for that compares schedules rather than players.

Possessions as the underlying currency
A basketball contest is a sequence of possessions, and almost everything a competitor accumulates is a function of how many they participate in. The number available depends on how quickly teams choose to play, which is a tactical decision that has swung considerably across periods. When the prevailing tempo is high, totals rise for everybody without anybody performing better than their counterparts in a slower period.
Comparing accumulated figures across those periods therefore compares tactical fashion as much as it compares individual production. Expressing production per possession removes the effect entirely and makes the comparison meaningful again. The correction is arithmetically trivial and it is skipped constantly, which is why totals from fast periods dominate so many historical lists.
What pace adjustment cannot fix
Pace adjustment corrects for the number of opportunities and does nothing about how valuable each opportunity was under the rules of the time. Rule changes affecting defensive positioning, contact and the value of attempts from distance alter the return on a possession directly. A period in which a particular attempt was worth less will show lower efficiency without any difference in the skill of those taking it.
Adjusting for that requires modelling the rule environment, which is far harder than counting possessions and much less commonly attempted. The honest position is that pace adjustment is necessary and insufficient, which is true of most single corrections.
Minutes, workload and availability
Time on court is the other component of opportunity, and typical workloads have shifted as understanding of recovery and rotation has developed. A competitor from a period with heavier minutes accumulates more simply through exposure, independent of pace or efficiency. Per-minute figures address this and introduce their own distortion, since heavy minutes usually mean playing while fatigued at a lower level.
A competitor with light minutes therefore posts better per-minute figures partly because they were rarely required to play tired. No single denominator solves both problems, which is why several should be reported rather than one selected.
Distribution of role within a team
Production also depends on how much a side directs its offence through a particular competitor, which is a coaching decision rather than an ability. A competitor given a large share of attempts will accumulate more and usually at lower efficiency, because additional attempts are harder ones. That trade-off between volume and efficiency is systematic enough that comparing the two figures without accounting for it is misleading.
Adjusting requires a model of how efficiency declines with usage, and such models are estimated from limited variation within careers. The adjustment is therefore directionally right and quantitatively uncertain, which should temper how confidently conclusions are stated.
Comparing across eras responsibly
The most defensible approach expresses production relative to contemporaries, which absorbs pace, rules and workload conventions simultaneously. It converts the question into how far somebody stood above their own environment, which is stable in a way absolute figures are not. The remaining difficulty is depth, since standing far above a shallow field is not equivalent to standing modestly above a deep one.
That problem has no clean solution, and acknowledging it is more useful than adding a speculative depth correction on top. Ranking within eras and discussing the relationship between them separately remains the format that overstates least. It also leaves the interesting question intact rather than burying it under a conversion factor that nobody can independently verify.
