Surface specialists and the ranking that cannot see surfaces
A single table cannot describe a sport played on materials that reward different skills, and the resulting blind spot explains a great deal of apparent unpredictability.

Different materials, different sports
The bounce, speed and friction of a playing surface determine how much time a player has to prepare a shot and how far a ball travels after landing. Those physical properties change which attributes are rewarded, so a skill set that dominates on one surface can be merely competitive on another. A low fast bounce rewards early contact, compact preparation and serving that removes the opportunity for a rally to develop at all.
A high slow bounce rewards endurance, heavy spin and the patience to construct a point across many exchanges without forcing an error. Treating results from those conditions as interchangeable is the central simplification a combined ranking makes.
What averaging destroys
A combined table sums points earned in very different conditions, which produces a figure that describes nobody precisely and everybody approximately. A pronounced specialist appears mid-table because an excellent record in favourable conditions is diluted by an ordinary one elsewhere. A well-rounded competitor with no outstanding surface can outrank that specialist while being clearly inferior in the conditions about to be played.
The table is not wrong, since it answers the question of who accumulated most overall, but it is being read as an answer to a narrower question. That mismatch is the reason seedings so often look indefensible once a tournament reaches the rounds where surface skill decides matches.
The short grass season problem
Some surfaces occupy only a brief part of the calendar, which means the evidence available about a competitor in those conditions is thin. A thin sample cannot support a confident estimate, so surface-specific ratings for the shortest seasons carry wide uncertainty by construction. Players also arrive from a very different surface with limited preparation, so early results reflect adaptation speed as much as underlying suitability.
The compressed calendar therefore mixes two effects that a rating cannot separate, which are aptitude for the surface and readiness at that moment. Any adjustment built on such a sample should be presented as provisional, and it usually is not.
Building a surface-aware measure
The straightforward remedy is to compute separate ratings from results on each surface, which immediately improves prediction inside those conditions. The cost is sample size, since dividing a year of results into three parts leaves each part with too few matches for stability. Partial pooling helps, by starting each surface rating from the overall rating and allowing surface evidence to pull it away gradually.
That approach concedes less to noise while still recognising specialisation, and it degrades gracefully when a competitor has played very little. It also produces an explicit number for how much a player differs across surfaces, which is interesting in its own right.
Committee adjustment and its justification
Some events depart from the published ranking when seeding, using a formula that adds weight to recent results in the relevant conditions. The practice is often criticised as arbitrary, yet it is a direct acknowledgement that the combined table answers the wrong question for that fortnight. A published adjustment formula is defensible because it is consistent and checkable, whereas discretionary reordering would not be.
The deeper point is that a single global ranking is being asked to serve purposes that require different measurements. Seeding by surface-specific evidence is not a violation of the ranking so much as an admission of its scope.
