Driver and machine: the attribution problem motorsport cannot solve
Every result in a machine sport is produced jointly by a competitor and equipment they did not build, and no available method fully separates the two contributions.

A jointly produced outcome
A finishing position depends on the machine, the strategy, the reliability and the competitor, and the record shows only the combined result. Ranking by results therefore ranks partnerships rather than individuals, which is the central difficulty in assessing any machine sport. The problem is not that the individual contribution is small, since it is clearly substantial, but that it is not separately observable.
A competitor in dominant equipment accumulates results that a competitor of identical ability elsewhere simply cannot access. Any ranking that ignores this is measuring the quality of the opportunity as much as the quality of the performance. Opportunity in this sport is allocated years in advance through contracts and budgets, which places much of the eventual result beyond individual influence.
Why the equipment effect is so large
Machine performance differences translate directly into lap time, and lap time differences accumulate across a race into positions. The gap between the best and worst machinery in a field can exceed the plausible range of competitor ability by a considerable margin. Because that gap persists across a whole season, it produces a stable ordering that looks like a ranking of competitors and is not.
The stability is what makes it so easy to misread, since a consistent result pattern feels like strong evidence about the individual. Consistency of equipment produces consistency of results, and consistency alone tells you nothing about which factor caused it.
Available approaches to separation
Comparing competitors within the same team holds the equipment approximately constant, which is the closest the sport comes to a controlled comparison. Chaining those comparisons across teams and seasons builds a network that can, in principle, place everybody on a common scale. The chain is fragile because each link carries uncertainty, and errors compound as the path between two competitors lengthens.
Sessions where machinery matters least offer another window, since conditions that reward adaptability compress the equipment advantage. None of these methods is decisive, and agreement between several is stronger evidence than any one of them alone.
What the equipment comparison misses
Machinery is developed around the preferences of those driving it, so a competitor may be fast in a machine built to suit them. That suitability is partly an achievement, since shaping development is a genuine skill, and partly an advantage over a teammate. Separating the two would require observing both competitors in a machine developed neutrally, which does not happen.
Setup freedom complicates it further, because two competitors in nominally identical machinery may be running quite different configurations. These effects are small relative to the equipment gap and large relative to the differences a ranking is trying to resolve.
Calibrating confidence to evidence
The appropriate conclusion is that motorsport supports confident statements about partnerships and cautious ones about individuals. Where a competitor has been compared directly against many others across varied equipment, the evidence base is genuinely strong. Where a career was spent almost entirely alongside one teammate in one team, almost nothing can be concluded with confidence.
Ranking systems rarely report which situation applies, though it determines how much weight any placing deserves. Publishing the extent of comparison alongside the rating would improve motorsport ranking more than any refinement of the arithmetic. It would also make clear how many celebrated comparisons rest on a single season of shared equipment and a handful of clean sessions.
