Why Grass Courts Are Cut To An Exact Height

Grass courts are mown to a specified height and held there for the whole of a championship. The precision is not ceremonial, because leaf length changes how the ball behaves and how fast the court wears.

Leaf length changes the bounce

A ball landing on grass loses energy partly to the leaf and partly to the soil beneath it, and longer leaf absorbs more of that energy.

The result of a longer cut is a slower, lower and less predictable bounce, because the ball may catch leaf unevenly on either side of its contact point.

A short, uniform cut delivers the ball more directly to the compacted soil, which produces the fast, low skid that defines championship grass.

The soil beneath does most of the work

Grass courts are built on heavy loam that is rolled hard before play, and it is that firmness rather than the grass that sets the pace of the surface.

Rolling raises the density of the top layer so it returns energy to the ball rather than absorbing it, which is why a well-prepared court plays fast even in cool weather.

The grass then acts largely as a wearing layer that protects the soil and controls friction at the moment of contact.

Cutting height is a wear decision too

Cut too low and the plant loses the leaf area it needs to feed itself, so recovery slows exactly when a fortnight of play is demanding most from it.

Cut too high and the court plays slow and irregular, and the extra leaf holds moisture that makes the surface slippery underfoot.

The chosen height is the compromise between those failures, arrived at through long observation of how a specific soil and grass mixture behaves.

Uniformity is the harder requirement

Achieving the height is straightforward; achieving it identically across every court in a venue is not.

Mowers are set and checked repeatedly, and cutting follows fixed directions so that leaf lies the same way on every court a player might be scheduled onto.

Without that discipline, a draw would hand some players a faster court than others, which is a competitive problem rather than an aesthetic one.

Why the height rarely changes

Because pace, bounce and wear all follow from the cut, altering it would alter the character of the event and the styles it rewards.

Venues therefore treat the height as a fixed parameter and adjust everything else, including rolling, irrigation and grass species, around it.

The stability is what allows players to prepare for a surface, since a grass season is short and there is little time to relearn a bounce.
