Why Clay Courts Are Watered Before Every Match

Watering binds the loose top dressing on a clay court, and the amount applied changes sliding, bounce height and how quickly the surface breaks up under play.

A clay court is not a solid surface but a layered one, topped with loose crushed material that moves under a player's foot. Water is what holds that layer together, and how much is applied changes the match.

The court is built in layers

Beneath the visible dressing sits a compacted base of coarser material, and beneath that a drainage layer that carries water away.

The top dressing is deliberately loose, because it is the sliding layer that allows a player to arrive at a ball without stopping dead.

If that layer dries out it becomes dust, which slides too readily and blows away, leaving the harder base exposed in patches.

Water is the binder

Moisture creates surface tension between particles, holding the dressing in place while still permitting controlled movement.

A correctly watered court gives a consistent slide of predictable length, which is what allows players to commit to a stroke while still moving.

Too much water and the dressing turns heavy and greasy, gripping the ball and dragging shoes rather than releasing them.

Moisture changes pace and bounce

A damp court is slower, because the ball digs slightly into the softened top layer and loses more energy on contact.

It also bounces higher for heavily spun shots, since a gripping surface converts more of the ball's rotation into upward rebound.

A dry court plays faster and lower, and rewards flatter hitting in a way that is unusual for the surface.

Preparation is a schedule, not a judgement call

Courts are brushed to redistribute the dressing and then watered on a fixed routine before play and at defined changeovers.

Standardising the routine matters because a court watered generously for one match and lightly for the next would not be the same test.

In hot, dry conditions the interval between waterings shortens, since evaporation removes the binder faster than play displaces it.

Weather rewrites the surface daily

Rain that falls during a session sits on the dressing before draining, and play cannot resume until the top layer regains its structure.

Wind is equally disruptive, drying the surface unevenly so that one end of a court can play noticeably differently from the other.

Those daily variations are why clay is described as a living surface, and why groundstaff activity between games is part of the competition rather than an interruption to it.
