Why Arena Humidity Makes A Court Slippery
Condensation on a hardwood floor comes from crowd moisture meeting a cool surface, and arenas manage it with air handling rather than with towels alone.

Players wiping the soles of their shoes and stoppages for mopping are symptoms of a building problem. Moisture reaches an arena floor through predictable routes, and the fixes are mechanical.
A crowd is a source of water
Thousands of people breathing and perspiring in an enclosed space release a substantial quantity of water vapour into the air.
That vapour raises the humidity of the bowl steadily through an event, and the air becomes closer to saturation as it goes on.
Players add to it directly, and sweat that reaches the floor is the most obvious and most localised part of the problem.
Condensation needs a cold surface
Water condenses out of air when it touches something below the dew point, which is why a cold floor produces a wet one.
Arenas that hold ice beneath the court are the clearest case, since the sheet cools the structure above it even through insulation and a covering deck.
The result is a film that appears without any visible source, forming across the whole surface rather than in one spot.
Air handling is the actual control
Reducing humidity in the bowl is the only durable fix, and that means moving conditioned, drier air across the floor.
Air handling systems are sized for the crowd load as well as for temperature, because dehumidification is a separate demand from cooling.
Where the system cannot keep up, the floor will keep wetting no matter how often it is mopped.
Slip risk is not evenly spread
Condensation collects where air movement is weakest, typically in corners and near ends of the floor away from supply vents.
Those areas are the ones where players report losing footing, and they are the same areas at every event in a given building.
Staff position themselves accordingly, which is why courtside wiping is concentrated in particular zones rather than distributed evenly.
Grip depends on shoes as well as floor
Outsole patterns are designed to channel dust and moisture away from the contact area, in the same way a tyre tread does.
Dust is the compounding factor, since a dry floor with dust on it can be as slippery as a damp one.
Cleaning routines therefore address both, and the combination of a dry, clean surface and a fresh outsole is what produces reliable footing.
