Why A Closed Roof Changes How The Ball Behaves

Shutting a stadium roof alters air temperature, humidity and airflow at once, and each of those changes the flight of the ball and the character of the surface below.

When a roof closes over a tennis court, the match that resumes is not the one that stopped. Air conditions inside a sealed bowl differ from those outside, and ball flight follows the air.

Still air removes a variable and adds pace

Outdoors, wind pushes serves off line and makes high balls unreliable, so players allow margin on their targets.

Indoors that margin is unnecessary, and players hit closer to lines and attack second serves more readily because the ball goes where it is aimed.

Removing wind also removes the drag variability that slows some shots and helps others, so rallies become more repeatable.

Warm air is thinner air

A closed bowl warms from lighting and from the crowd, and warmer air is less dense, offering less resistance to a moving ball.

Lower density means less drag and less aerodynamic effect from spin, so heavily spun shots dip slightly later than they would outdoors.

The combination generally makes an indoor court play faster, which is why serving becomes more dominant when a roof closes.

Humidity works on both ball and court

Sealing a stadium traps moisture from players and spectators, and a humid ball absorbs water, gaining weight and losing liveliness.

On grass, trapped humidity keeps the leaf damp, which is why venues run air handling systems to dry the surface before play restarts.

Without that treatment the court would be slippery, and the delay after closing a roof is largely about conditioning the air rather than moving the panels.

Light changes what players see

Artificial light is uniform and constant, replacing shifting shadows and the low sun that makes late-afternoon serving difficult at some venues.

The ball is easier to track against a lit background, which advantages returners marginally and reduces the value of a disguised toss.

Broadcast conditions improve for the same reason, and that consistency is part of why roofs were built at all.

The decision to close is regulated

Roof operation is governed by tournament rules that specify who decides and at what point in a match a closure may occur.

The rules exist because closing mid-match changes conditions, and an unregulated closure could be seen to favour whichever player benefits from a faster court.

Where possible, tournaments close between matches rather than during them, so that both players start under the same conditions they will finish in.
