Which sports can be ranked objectively, and which never will be
The reliability of a ranking depends on the structure of the competition itself, and some sports simply do not generate the kind of evidence an ordering requires.

Sports that rank themselves
Where performance is expressed as a measured quantity under standardised conditions, ordering competitors is close to trivial and requires no interpretation at all. A distance, a time or a weight produces a number that means the same thing regardless of who recorded it or where the attempt took place. Even here conditions intrude, since surfaces, altitude and wind alter what the same effort produces, which is why comparability rules exist in the first place.
Those rules are an admission that raw numbers need context, but the context is small and well understood compared with what other sports face. The result is that disputes in such sports concern eligibility and conditions rather than the order itself, which is a much narrower kind of argument.
Dense head-to-head competition
Sports where competitors meet each other frequently generate an enormous web of direct comparisons, and that web supports a rating system very well. Every additional fixture between two parts of the field strengthens the connections that allow indirect comparisons to be made with reasonable confidence. When the schedule is balanced, the ordering that emerges is stable, because it is supported from many directions rather than resting on a few results.
Weakly connected fields behave completely differently, since the rating of one cluster relative to another depends on a small number of bridging encounters. That structural difference explains why some rating tables feel authoritative and others feel like informed guesses presented with unwarranted precision.
Judged sports and the criteria problem
Where a panel assigns scores, the ranking is only as consistent as the rubric, and rubrics must translate qualitative impressions into numbers. Difficulty and execution can be separated and scored independently, which makes the process more transparent without making it fully objective. The remaining subjectivity is not a scandal, since the sport is defined partly by qualities that resist measurement, and pretending otherwise would misdescribe it.
What matters is that the rubric is published, applied consistently and revised openly when it produces results that participants recognise as perverse. A judged sport with a clear rubric is more honestly ranked than an unjudged one with a hidden formula.
Team sports and attribution
In team competition the observable outcome belongs to a group, so any individual ranking requires dividing credit that was never separately produced. Statistical methods attempt this by comparing what happens when a competitor is present against what happens when they are absent. Those methods depend on the absences being frequent, varied and unrelated to the strength of the surrounding group, which is rarely true in practice.
A competitor who plays almost every minute in a stable side generates very little of the contrast the method needs to work. The resulting estimates therefore carry uncertainty that is wide enough to swallow most of the differences a published order presents as settled.
Matching the claim to the evidence
The practical conclusion is not that ranking should be abandoned but that the confidence of a claim should match the structure that produced it. A measured sport supports a firm order, a densely connected sport supports a reasoned one, and a sparse or heavily team-dependent sport supports only a rough grouping. Presenting groups rather than positions is often the most honest available format, since it communicates that several competitors are genuinely indistinguishable.
Readers accept that framing readily when the reason is explained, and they lose trust quickly when precision is claimed and then fails to hold. Choosing the format that the evidence can support is the difference between analysis and decoration.
