How Drop-In Pitches Are Grown Away From The Stadium
Some venues grow their playing surface at a separate nursery site and move it into the stadium in trays, which separates the growing environment from the event schedule.

A drop-in pitch is grown somewhere other than the stadium it will be played on, then transported and installed. The arrangement exists because the best place to grow grass is rarely the best place to stage events.
The nursery site is chosen for agronomy
Turf for a drop-in system is grown in an open field with full sunlight, natural airflow and no shadow from stands.
Those conditions produce dense root mass and strong leaf, which is exactly what an enclosed stadium cannot provide.
The soil profile in the trays matches what will be required in the stadium, so the surface arrives already consolidated rather than needing months to settle.
Trays are engineered structures
Each tray carries a full profile of rootzone, drainage and reinforcement, and it must be rigid enough to be lifted without flexing.
Flex is the critical constraint, because a tray that bends during transport cracks the profile and produces uneven bounce afterwards.
Handling equipment is specified around the loaded weight of a tray, which is considerable once the soil is at working moisture.
Installation is a joinery problem
Trays are placed against one another and levelled so that the playing surface reads as continuous, with no lip at any seam.
The joins are then dressed and the grass encouraged to knit across them, which takes days rather than hours.
Where a venue installs a pitch shortly before an event, the seams are the part inspected most carefully during the pre-match assessment.
The advantage is scheduling freedom
With the pitch removable, the stadium floor is available for concerts and other sports without any agronomic consequence.
The pitch meanwhile continues growing at the nursery, so it arrives in condition rather than having survived a fortnight under staging.
Venues that host many non-sporting events therefore gain calendar capacity that a fixed natural pitch could never support.
The costs are real and recurring
Growing, storing, transporting and installing a full pitch is a substantial operation repeated for every cycle.
The system also requires a nursery site of adequate size within reasonable transport distance, which is difficult in dense urban areas.
Those constraints are why drop-in pitches remain concentrated at multi-use venues where the event calendar justifies the expense rather than at conventional football grounds.
Players and officials tend to judge the result on the seams alone, since a system that delivers a genuinely continuous surface is indistinguishable underfoot from a pitch that never left the stadium.
