How Court Speed Is Actually Measured
Surface pace is quantified by firing balls at a court and measuring how much horizontal speed and vertical rebound survive the bounce, producing a comparable rating.

Players talk about fast and slow courts as though pace were a matter of opinion. It is in fact measured, using a defined test that yields a number comparable across venues and surfaces.
What pace physically means
When a ball lands, friction between ball and surface removes horizontal speed while the surface returns some vertical speed as rebound.
A fast court removes little horizontal speed and returns modest height, so the ball skids through low and reaches the opponent sooner.
A slow court does the opposite, scrubbing speed and lifting the ball, which gives the receiving player more time to set up.
The test uses a machine, not a player
Balls are fired at the surface at a fixed speed, spin and angle, and the incoming and outgoing velocities are recorded.
Because the input is identical every time, differences in the output are attributable to the surface rather than to a striker's technique.
The measurements combine into a single pace rating, and surfaces are grouped into bands from slow through medium to fast.
The same surface type can sit in different bands
Hard courts are the clearest example, since the acrylic coating includes sand that determines how abrasive the finish is.
More sand and a coarser texture produce more friction and a slower court, while a smoother finish produces a quicker one.
That is why two hard-court events can feel entirely different despite being nominally identical surfaces, and why players describe some hard courts as gritty and others as slick.
The thickness of the coating matters as well, since a thicker acrylic layer over concrete cushions the impact slightly and lifts the ball a fraction higher on landing.
Conditions move the number
Temperature affects both the ball and the surface, and a warm court with a warm ball plays faster because the ball deforms and recovers more readily.
Air density matters too, so altitude venues play fast simply because the ball meets less resistance in flight between bounces.
Humidity dulls a ball as it absorbs moisture, which reduces effective pace even where the court itself has not changed.
Ratings shape the competitive calendar
Tournaments choose a pace band deliberately, balancing the styles they wish to reward against continuity with neighbouring events.
Consistency within a swing of tournaments lets players prepare, and abrupt changes in rating between events are noticed and discussed quickly.
The existence of a measurement is what makes those discussions concrete rather than anecdotal, since a claim about a court can be checked.
