A grass court at the start of a championship and the same court in its second week are not the same surface. The wear follows a predictable geography, and it changes what shots are worth playing.

Wear concentrates where feet stop

Damage is caused by braking and turning rather than by running, so it accumulates where players change direction most sharply.

That means the baseline behind each service box, the area around the centre mark, and the service landing zones lose cover long before the rest of the court.

By the closing rounds those areas are often bare loam, while the mid-court and the tramlines remain green and largely untouched.

Bare soil plays differently from grass

Exposed loam is firm and slightly abrasive, so the ball grips more than it does on leaf and sits up rather than skidding through.

The practical effect is that late-tournament baselines play a little slower and higher, which suits players who rally from the back of the court.

Footing also changes, since dry soil offers different grip from cut grass and behaves differently again once it takes moisture.

The service box tells the story

Serve landing zones wear in two distinct patches corresponding to wide and body serves, and those patches are visible from the stands within days.

Once the patch is bare, a serve landing in it kicks up rather than skidding low, reducing the advantage that a flat delivery holds early in the event.

Players who rely on unreturnable serving therefore tend to see slightly more returns in play as the fortnight progresses.

Recovery is impossible mid-event

Grass cannot regrow at the pace of tournament play, so groundstaff manage decline rather than repair it.

Work between days is limited to mowing, light rolling, careful irrigation and marking, all aimed at keeping wear even rather than reversing it.

Scheduling is part of that management, since spreading matches across courts slows the rate at which any single surface degrades.

Renovation happens after everyone leaves

Full restoration is a post-event project involving scarifying, reseeding and a long establishment period before the surface can carry play again.

That cycle is why grass venues host so few weeks of tennis a year, and why the grass season sits in such a narrow window.

The economics of the surface, in other words, follow directly from the biology of a plant that takes months to replace what a fortnight removes.
